Modern-day AU deets
Katniss was born and raised in a coal mining town in the Appalachian mountains by her EMT mother and her coal miner father. She has a younger sister, Prim, short for Primrose. Since the death of her father she and Prim have become closer than ever.
At the same time a rift formed between Katniss and her mother, and Katniss isn't sure if she wants to try to repair it, she doesn't know if it's worth the effort.
Katniss' father was probably the most influential person in her life, he was the one who taught her to use a bow, how to hunt, how to swim, and what plants in the woods outside of town were edible, as well as which ones were poisonous. As such, his death was a turning point in her life, where she had to give up or persevere. She decided to survive.
There was a time shortly after her father died when she was afraid that the rest of the family were all going to starve. They couldn't afford food because there were complications with the assistance from the mining company and the insurance, and her mother had slipped into a deep depression and wasn't able to work or to sort out the paperwork (Something that Katniss finally managed with the help of Mrs. Hawthorne, her best friend Gale's mother whose husband had died in the same mine collapse as Katniss' father)
She says that Peeta, the baker's son, saved her life, always making sure there was a loaf of bread on the Everdeen's doorstep after baking day, usually they were burnt, sometimes they were stale, but it was what he could do, and it took Katniss weeks to find out he was doing it on purpose.
She's got one true friend in Gale, the two bonded after their fathers died and they became the main providers for their families. As they were both too young to get jobs, they supplemented by hunting and gathering in the woods outside of town, going to the town's weekly market to sell what they could afford not to eat themselves.
She's been known to charge into unsure situations without thinking, but more often she does a lot of over-thinking, waiting until all the options have been stripped away, leaving her with just one choice.
She's always been something of a loner, and more of a homebody than most of her peers. Though everyone who's known her says she has no idea the effect she has on people, which is true. She didn't know that Peeta, the boy who had quite literally saved her life loved her (or said that he loved her) until the day she left for university (on a full scholarship)
She was completely surprised by her scholarship, as she never applied for one (she found out later that Prim had been applying for her) and as such she's not sure what to think about it, as she hasn't been away from home before, her mother and her sister are excited for her, thinking that any opportunity to get out of their one-horse town is a good one. Her best friend Gale thinks that it's a bad idea.
Other random facts:
She can sing, folk songs and old union songs mostly, the ones her father taught her. Though it's not something she advertises, and it takes a lot to get her to sing where anyone can hear her. She's claustrophobic, especially when it comes to caves/mines.
She also has acute anthophobia, roses specifically.
